Kentucky Stat Police say someone fired into the officer’s cruiser, and the officer was injured by glass that burst in as a result of the gunshot. The officer had a non-life threatening arm injury and was flown to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

UPDATE 6/12/23 @ 11:30 p.m.

OLIVE HILL, Ky. (WSAZ) - A shelter-in-place was lifted Monday evening after a shooting involving an Olive Hill Police officer.

Meanwhile, as of late Monday night, the suspect remained on the run.

The incident happened around 3:15 p.m. in a parking lot near the intersection of Cross and Railroad streets, sending the officer by helicopter to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Huntington. He suffered a non-life-threatening arm injury after glass burst in his cruiser as a result of the gunshot, Kentucky State Police said.

According to KSP trooper Bobby King, the officer is in stable condition.

“It’s a blessing, and we’re grateful for that,” King said.

He said the suspect vehicle is a 2008 white Pontiac Torrent SUV with Kentucky plates ACH811. Anyone with information is asked to call KSP Post in Ashland at 606-928-6421.

“Right now, there’s no threat to the public,” King said.

Businesses in downtown Olive Hill were placed on lockdown a couple hours following the shooting.

Becky Adkins owns Events by Beck, a flower shop located near the scene.

“I was getting ready to make a delivery,” she said. “I walked outside, and a worker from another business told me to go back inside, there was an active shooter. I did what they said, came back inside and locked my doors.”

Adkins says it was unlike anything she’s seen since opening here store.

“It was pretty scary,” she said. “I didn’t think I was in any imminent danger. It’s not every day you see the law running up the streets with long guns and their bulletproof vests on. It was pretty scary. It was a little nerve-racking.”

Stephanie Sparks lives a few blocks from where the shooting occurred.

“You don’t know what this guy was thinking or why he did it,” Sparks said. “Did he have a personal vendetta or did he have a disagreement with the officer? You can settle that by sitting down and talking to a person, not getting a gun and going ‘pow pow pow.’ It’s crazy.”
