-- WHEELER, WIELLER --
The family groups represented in this collection may not be complete, because information was entered bit by bit as I found it or happened upon it; I have not done any systematic research on these families. Because they do not compose whole family genealogies, these listings are arranged differently from most genealogical records or histories. Each listing is a family group, and is arranged and filed alphabetically under the name of the head of the family. Names are generally in alphabetical order (disregarding spelling variations and middle names), then in approx. chronological order. The first sorting is by surname (mixing together any and all spelling variations), then by given name, then by approximate birthdate (when known) in approximate chronological order. For easier reference, surnames in headings are grouped together under the most common spelling usage that evolved in this geographical location, regardless of individualistic spellings in the records themselves. Cross references are used in most cases where surname spellings substantially vary.
Within the quoted records, the individual spellings have been (mostly) retained because they sometimes provide clues (although in general—but with exceptions—they seem to largely reflect the record keeper's particular orthography and not always, at this early period, any special family preference). Those interested can see the variety and evolvement of a particular name’s spelling and the interesting and sometimes amusing attempts at phonetic reproduction. Keep in mind that before names and spellings were standardized, records reflected the individualistic whim of the particular recorder (often two different spellings of the same name within the same document). In addition, all records were handwritten, and sometimes deciphering a handwritten name in early records can be quite challenging! So expect to search under all possibilities of spelling (for both surnames and given names). Given names are grouped together without regard for middle initials or middle names. Because middle names and/or initials are sometimes used, sometimes not used in various records, it seemed simplest to arrange entries as if the middle names or initials did not exist. Usually all variations of a given name are grouped together as though spelled one way: Jan, Johannes, John, etc. are all grouped as one (but also look under the other forms). Sources and references are included with each "family" grouping, but may or may not include sources that are cited (or are obvious, such as baptismal records, etc.) within the narrative or listing itself.
As with any compiled genealogical record, researchers should regard this information as leads and clues, and should verify all data with independent research. I welcome, and would be grateful for, any additions or corrections, especially with source citations. copyright 2011 Patricia A. Wheeler, Thomas Thomas Wheeler son of
(Thomas Wheeler, Sr.)
m. (poss) 5 May 1613 Cranefield, Co. Bedford, England
Ann Halsey dau. of
d. before 23 Aug 1654 d. 20 Oct 1659 Known as Thomas, Sr., he came to Concord, whence he came (with the Jones contingent in Sept. 1644 as we suppose) to Fairfield, CT. Here land was recorded to him, and adjacent land to Thomas, Jr., in Jan. 1649 [1649/50]. This Thomas, Jr., we take to be the brother named 1654 in his will, but whether actual brother or brother-in-law the evidence is inadequate to establish. Though rare, brothers sometimes were given identical names, but usually they were half-brothers, with different mothers. Ephraim Wheeler was certainly brother of Thomas, Sr. Will 5 May 1654, proved 23 Aug. 1654; wife Ann; elder son Thomas, property in Concord; dau. Sarah wife of Thomas Sherwood and their son Thomas; dau. (not named) and four gr. children, Mary, James, Thomas, and John Bennett; son John, lands in Fairfield; brother Thomas Wheeler Lieutenant, Robert Lockwood, and Andrew Ward, all of Fairfield, overseers. Ephraim Wheeler was an appraiser. Will of Ann Wheeler, 21 Aug. 1659; elder son Thomas, his wife and children; children of dau. Hannah, mentioning Sarah and Hannah Bennett; gr. child Sarah Sherwood; Annis Sherwood, wife of my son-in-law; to Rebecca Turney, my best hat; to Ann Squire, a petticoat. Inv. 20 Oct. 1659. The illegible conclusion of the will may have named her son John. The Wheeler Family in America, which we cannot follow implicitly with regard to this Wheeler family, states that Thomas m. at Cranefield, co. Bedford, Eng., 5 May 1613, Ann Halsey; and the baptisms of their children at Cranefield, given below, are from the same source. ---children of Thomas Wheeler & (poss) Ann Halsey: (b. & bp. Wheeler, Thomas Thomas Wheeler m. Jane (Joan) d. 26 Nov 1672 Milford, CT d. buried buried 11 June 1673 Milford, CT He was Deputy (Milford) to Conn. Leg., May and Oct. 1670, May 1671. He was adm. to Milford Church, 9 Aug. 1640, and d. at Milford, 26 Nov. 1672. His wife Jane was adm. 27 Sept. 1640, and buried 11 June 1673. She is called Joan in probate records; no evidence has been seen for the oft-repeated assertion that she was a Bryan. Nor can we accept Orcutt's statement that the Milford Thomas was son of Thomas, Sr., of Fairfield, despite its acceptance by the compiler of the bulky Wheeler Family in America, for the Milford Thomas was certainly too old a man to permit of such identification. The wills of Thomas and of William of Stratford prove that they were brothers, but of their parentage we permit ourselves no guess. Will 18 Nov. 1672, proved 11 June 1673; eldest son John and John's three eldest daus., Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth; 2d son Nathaniel and his dau. Esther; sons Ephraim and Joseph; son Thomas; my bro.'s children here, viz., William, Thomas, Sarah; wife Joan. Inv. of his widow Joan, 23 June 1673. Wheeler, Thomas (Ens.) (Lt.) Thomas Wheeler Ens., Conn. Col. Troop, May 1653, having previously held title of Lt. For all his activity and prominence, the identity of this man has been an enigma. Savage identifies him with Thomas, Sr., of Fairfield, which is certainly wrong, as the Lieutenant was living after the death of Thomas, Sr. Orcutt makes him son of Thomas, Sr., and then proceeds to identify him further with Thomas of Milford; and the Wheeler Family in America follows this solution. Now the Thomas who was appointed Ensign in 1653 by Conn. Colony was distinctly called "Lt. Thomas of Fairfield." But the Milford Thomas was living there by 1640, and until 1657 continued to have his children bapt. there with great regularity at two-year intervals. As Milford was in New Haven Colony in 1653, it should be obvious that he could not be the man on whom Conn. Colony conferred this commission in its colonial troop which was raised for possible war service during the trouble with the Dutch. The Milford Thomas located there before there were any Wheelers in Fairfield; never lived in Fairfield, nor, so far as we have ascertained, in Stratford, though he purchased land in the latter place which he conveyed to two of his sons, still being called "of Milford"; and New Haven Col. Rec. mention him in 1659 as marshal at Milford, and his house at Milford (though he not living in it) in 1660, together with other references showing him active at Milford, and not one mention which gives him any military title; while Lt. Thomas Wheeler, mentioned both times by that title, was in 1658 and 1663 requesting New Haven Colony to accept within its jurisdiction his purchases from the Indians near Derby. There are but two men of the name Thomas Wheeler with whom it is possible to identify the lieutenant. One was the son of Thomas, Sr., of Fairfield; he in his father's will received the Concord estate, and we follow Savage and Mrs. Schenck rather than the Wheeler Family in America in believing that he settled in Concord, whether or not he ever resided in Fairfield. If the children who were recorded to Thomas in Concord from 1649 to 1662 belonged to this man and were actually born in Concord, that would preclude his being the lieutenant who was active in Conn. during that period. Without research in Concord, the evidence at hand is insufficient and too confusing to permit a definite conclusion. We are inclined to believe that Thomas, son of Thomas, Sr., remained in Concord, had wife Sarah, and children born at Concord: Sarah, b. 10 July 1649; Joseph, b. 18 Aug. 1651; Ann, b. 20 Dec. 1653; John, b. 18 Feb. 1655/6; Mary, b. 20 Dec. 1658; and Thomas, b. 29 Mar. 1662. The Thomas, Jr., who had a homelot in Fairfield by 1650, was prob. the brother named in the will of Thomas, Sr., in 1654. Perhaps he was a younger half-brother, born as late as 1610. Doubtless he came to Fairfield in 1644, and on 16 June 1650 he sold to Henry Jackson land which had been purchased from Robert Hawkins and Richard Vowles. In 1653/4 he sold his homelot and several other pieces of land, being called "Jr." and in one instance "the younger"; and not long after rem. to Stratford, being called of that town when he bought land in Derby from the Indians in 1657. At Derby he remained as a trader until 1664, when he sold the property there to Mr. Alexander Bryan of Milford, and returned, as we suppose, to Mass. Since Lt. Thomas Wheeler in 1658 and 1663 had dealings with New Haven Colony, there being an uncertainty whether his Derby holdings fell within its jurisdiction or in that of Conn. Colony, and was definitely called lieutenant in these transactions, we need not hesitate to identify him with the Lt. Thomas of Fairfield who received a commission from Conn. Colony in 1653, at which time he lived within the bounds of that colony.(Lt. Thomas testified concerning Indian claims [not dated, but apparently 1659] and spoke of having been formerly an inhabitant of Fairfield.) His history is therefore traced from his advent in Fairfield in 1644 until he left Derby in 1664. His appointment as Lt. is not found in Conn. records, and may have been by Mass. before he came to Fairfield. It is reasonable, as he disappears from Conn., to assume his return to Concord and to believe that he was the Capt. who was wounded in K. Philip's War, 1675; for inexperienced men were not appointed to serve in high military positions in the Indian wars, and our Lt. Thomas had had sundry dealings with the Indians, as Conn. records attest. It is further likely, though Savage makes the same Thomas marry both Ruth and Sarah (in that order), that it was Lt. Thomas who m. Ruth Wood, dau. of William of Concord; whose will in 1670 named both Ruth and her husband, thereby invalidating the supposition that he already had a second wife Sarah.(Sarah, if our conclusions are correct, was the only known wife of Thomas of Concord, son of Thomas, Sr., of Fairfield.) It should be noted that when he bought his Derby land in 1657, the deed was witnessed by Ruth and Timothy Wheeler. Ruth was doubtless his wife, and Timothy a youthful son. This 30

Melgert Vanduzen on list of petioners asking for one more constable for their precinct. [Doher 1:329]2 He served in the Third Regiment of the Dutchess County Militia in Dutchess Co. The first records of the 3rd Militia are for elections of officers held 20 Sept. 1775, commissions issued 17 Oct. 1775. In Capt Peter Coons Company were: John Van Duesen, Captain; Valentine Wheeler, 1st Lieut.; Luke Wolcott, 2nd Lieut; and Rudolph Knickerbocker, Ensign. He later served in the 5th Dutchess County Militia which was composed almost exclusively of men from Beekman-Unionvale with one company coming from Dover. On 10 March 1778, Valentine was a Captain with Luke Woolcot, 1st Lieut. and Theophilus Sweet, 2nd Lieut.2 In his will, he wrote: I, Valentine Wheeler, being sensible that it is appointed for all men once to die, and after Death to come to Judgment, being sensible of my own frailty and mortality, would now, whilst I am in perfect senses, make this my last will and Testament. I leave to my wife the use of the home farm where I now live until my son Josiah is of age, and after that the use of one-third. I leave to my son Josiah all my home farm after his mother's decease. I leave to my son Ephraim the farm where he now lives, lying on the mountain, beginning at the road on the top of the mountain, and all south as the road runs to the bog meadow, and south as far as my land goes. I leave to my son John the farm where Adam Coon now lives, running south as far as my land goes to John Bolt's land, and then a straight line to the top of the bald mountain, from thence to the French Doctor's former line. I leave to my daughter, Catharine Wheeler, the lot of land where Johanas Coon now lives, runing from the top of bald mountain south to Justice Matthews' land, from thence to the Connecticut line. Dated August 10, 1782. Witnesses, Edward Wheeler, George Wheeler, John Chamberlain, Physician. Proved, September 18, 1782. "The verbal, nuncupative will of Captain Valentine Wheeler, made the next morning after he made his written will, being the 11 day of August, 1782. Captain Valentine Wheeler called John Chamberlain to come to him, and he said he had forgot some things as to his movable estate. He had more than enough to pay his debts, and that his son Ephraim should have his young oxen and horses. And that there was an obligation against Johannis Koom, which he gave to his daughter, Catharine Wheeler, and the rest of the movables to his wife, and Tom the negro was to live with her as long as he or she lived. And he desired that John Chamberlain should assist his wife in settling his estate." In presence of John Chamberlain, Catharine Wheeler, Anna Conant.
