Thursday and Friday: Staunton 7949 Fredricksburg 7954 time she received two awards, one from the American Institute of Architects and the other from the American Society of Landscape Architects, for her use of mixed-use urban infill on a building in Washington. Arnold said she decided to enter the public sector because she wanted to contribute to her community. For Arnold, planning and landscape design combine aspects of her many passions.

"It involves elements of everything that I've always been interested in or cared about," she said. As a child, Arnold loved to draw and garden. In high school, she discovered photography. She attended the Philadelphia College of Art, now The University of the Arts, where she studied metal smithing and wood working, before going on to get her master's degree in sculpture from the University of Washington in Seattle. Arnold had spent a decade teaching art to children at Stoneridge School of the Sacred Heart in Bethesda, when she decided to take a class in landscape architecture at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

"I just loved it," she said. "I did a very crazy thing, I applied to school at U.Va." Arnold then quit her job and moved to Charlottesville to pursue her second master's degree. It was during this time that she met her husband, Anthony Baker, at a Halloween party in Washington. Arnold said her past experiences have helped her in her role as a landscape architect. When you design environments that include sculptural ideas and metal, wood and other materials you begin to approach landscape architecture, she said.

sunshine. Lexington Staunton Continued from the front page planning commission member William Vaughn. Arnold said Staunton's approach to corridor overlay is unique and positive. "I'm lucky to be the one they chose to help with it," she said. Arnold said her initial goals will be to finish organizing ideas so that the city attorney can draft an ordinance, and to choose which of the city's 11 corridors to write guidelines for first.

"Staunton believes that each corridor should have its own guidelines," she said. "It's really fantastic." Very few other localities have done it that way, she said. The guidelines will address factors like site design, the circulation of vehicles and people to and from buildings, architecture and lighting, she said. Arnold said she is looking forward to seeing the results of the corridor overlay. "It will create environments that people want to be in," she said.

"I think it will increase commerce and property values," she said. "It's been shown to do that." Sisson said Arnold comes highly recommended. "We're just happy to have someone of her caliber and experience to come work with us on the corridor overlay," she said. For the past three years, Arnold worked as a planner in Albemarle County, where she specialized in entrance corridors and rural preservation. Before that, Arnold ran her own landscape architecture and design firm, while at the same time teaching design as an adjunct professor at Mary Baldwin College.

"Drive the parkway and get up as high as you can" in elevation to see as much color as possible, MacFarlane said. Park officials insist there may still be some nice colors. "It's still a little early to tell exactly how the leaves are going to look," Beck-Herzog said. "Every year is different.

Mother Nature paints a different show, which is what makes Skyline Drive and the valleys look so spectacular." Virginia Tech forestry professor John R. Seiler said the display could be a little early this year by a few days. The peak for the Blacksburg area would come in the third or fourth week of October and in the final week for central Virginia, he said. As days get shorter, leaves turn yellow, red, orange and purple. Plants that use the leaf-greening chemical chlorophyll to manufacture food begin to shut down for the winter by withdrawing chlorophyll from their leaves.

Brynn Kennedy Guy K. Stump Elementary School Continued from the front page see the leaves change should come earlier in the expected peak period. "It's great, where I live, I look up at one of the mountains of the park. I literally watch as the colors swarm at the top and then start to creep down the mountain," Beck-Herzog said. Still those hoping to see dazzling colors may be disappointed, said Russ MacFar-lane, the forest silviculturalist for the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests.

He expects little leaf color other than brown this season because the drought is causing trees to drop their leaves early.
