Zenless Zone Zero - Release Date, Platforms, & Confirmed Characters (2024)

The release date and platforms for Zenless Zone Zero have been officially confirmed and there is good news for players waiting for HoYoverse’s new action RPG. Zenless Zone Zero, also commonly referred to as ZZZ, is an upcoming action game from the developers of Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail. This new game, however, will be set in the city of New Eridu, the last safe haven for humanity after most of civilization on the planet was destroyed by supernatural entities known as Hollows. The game’s artistic design takes on a more urban and cyberpunk approach to its setting.

This is directly opposed to the fantasy-inclining world of Genshin or the starfaring adventure in Honkai, for instance. Similar to the other HoYoverse titles, however, players can gather different characters in Zenless Zone Zero through a gacha banner system and then form teams, where each member of the party plays a role. As such, some characters are damage dealers, while others are healers, and others operate as supports and tanks, for example. As players progress through the campaign, they need to make their way through dangerous stages using these very characters to continue advancing through the story.

Action RPG Will Arrive This Summer

Following a series of tests of the past year, both private and open to the public, the new action RPG finally gained a release date. As announced by HoYoverse, Zenless Zone Zero will be released on July 4. The game was originally announced back in May 2022 with a short and has been in development for a while. Now, the game is concluded and ready for release. Nevertheless, this is a live-service title, which means it will consistently gain new content to play through, over regular patches, much like the ones that are added every six weeks to Genshin Impact.

Game Will Have Cross-Progression, Much Like Genshin & Honkai

As opposed to several other HoYoverse games, ZZZ will arrive simultaneously across all platforms. The developer announced that Zenless Zone Zero will be released for PlayStation 5 consoles, PC, iOS, and Android devices, all on July 4. The game will have cross-progression, meaning players will be able to use their accounts on whichever platform they prefer. The progress obtained on a PC, for instance, will be able to be continued on an Android device. To do this, players will need to use their account, which they can access on the official HoYoverse website, to register for the game.

In addition to cross-progression, players will also have access to cross-platform play in the game. This means that players will be able to connect with their friends, regardless of the platform they use to progress through the title. Players should be able to add each other in Zenless Zone Zero through an exclusive in-game identity, which overpasses any boundaries normally imposed by platforms. Multiplayer in ZZZ is exclusively cooperative. In it, players can farm certain activities together with characters chosen by allies. All players control their own characters in real-time, which deactivates the time-slow mechanic after perfect dodges.

Characters Known As Agents Are Split Into Factions

As was previously mentioned, characters in ZZZ are mostly obtained through a gacha system, and each of them is unique. Each character, known as an Agent, has a ranking, an element (called Attribute), a damage type (called Fighting Style), and an affiliation to an in-game faction. Factions do not affect whether or not players can pair up characters in their team comps but mostly represent to which group that Agent belongs in the story. The idea is to mix up characters of different Attributes and Fighting Styles to take advantage of certain enemies’ weaknesses.

As of now, there are nine confirmed S-Rank characters and seven A-Rank characters. There is a chance that not all of these will be available immediately at launch, as some S-Ranks only appear in limited-time banners and players may have to wait until they are featured in the gacha system. Contrarily, some S-Rank characters in Zenless Zone Zero are part of the regular drop pool, meaning there is a chance to obtain them in whichever banner is available at any time.

A-Rank units are the most common and are also part of the regular drop pool for all banners in the game. They are not time-gated in banners and, once they are released, they can be obtained at any moment. Equally as important as characters are W-Engines and Disk Drives. W-Engines are similar to a character’s weapon, while Disk Drives serve as gear that boosts stats. This is how players fine-tune the builds for their characters in Zenless Zone Zero and, in doing so, optimize their damage output, survivability, and other features on the battlefield.

It should not take long for players to definitively start playing the new action RPG. Players can expect a constant income of updates over a set schedule that will add more story quests, limited-time events, and characters to control in battle as the live-service game progresses. The release of Zenless Zone Zero is set to be another mark in HoYoverse’s presence in the gaming industry over the past few years.
