What is sweet cream cold foam?
Also referred to as cream cold foam, this frothy concoction, made popular by Starbucks, is crafted from a blend of heavy cream and milk, sweetened with a vanilla syrup, however there are flavors such as pistachio, lavender, and sakura cherry blossom.
Is it the same as cold foam?
Cold foam is a thinner, lighter frothed milk (with syrup, but no heavy cream).
Why you'll love this matcha cold foam recipe
This recipe for Matcha Cream Cold Foam adds matcha green tea powder to the foam to give it a beautiful shade of green color.
It is:
Easy to make: matcha with cold foam is really simple to put together, with minimal ingredients.
Delicious: adding matcha green tea powder adds additional flavor to the heavy cream and milk mixture.
Not too sweet: the green tea foam helps to temper down the overall sweetness of a drink... a great addition to any drink that may be too sweet for your liking.
Versatile: add the velvety smooth, creamy matcha foam to any drink from matcha chai tea lattes, cold brew coffee, or double the tea in an iced matcha latte.

Equipment you'll need
- handheld electric frother or milk frother: for whipping the cream and milk mixture; alternatively, you can use a French press to froth up the milk
- or mason jar: you can also use a mason jar (secured with a lid) and shake the mixture if you don't have a frother or French press
Ingredients you'll need
- matcha powder: choose a high-quality pure matcha powder for the best flavor and taste; I highly recommend using a matcha that you enjoy drinking; note: Starbucks matcha contains a mixture of matcha powder with sweetener premixed in
- heavy whipping cream: at least 36% milkfat, cold
- whole milk: or a non-dairy alternative if you wish, such as coconut milk, almond milk, or soy milk
Where to buy?
You can find these ingredients for the Starbucks matcha cold foam at your local grocery store. For matcha powder, you can find it online or in large supermarkets.
How to make it
Combine heavy cream, whole milk, vanilla extract, matcha powder and sugar in a tall mason jar.
Use an electric handheld frother to froth the mixture, just until aerated and slightly foamy. Be careful not to overwhip.
Add to your favorite coffee, matcha tea latte, or any drink you like.
How to use
Use the matcha cream cold foam on any cold drink you like.
It pairs well with espresso/coffee-based drinks, and tea such as matcha or chai.
Try the matcha cold foam on a strawberry matcha latte, or sakura matcha latte.
Or add it into a matcha cold foam pink drink.
How to store
Store the matcha cold foam in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Be sure to give the matcha cream drink mixture a stir before using, as the cream will separate from the milk.
Do not freeze the cream cold foam as the texture will change.
Expert tips & FAQs
What if I overwhipped the cold foam?
Add in a little whole milk or cream to thin it out and swirl gently.
The matcha cream separated.
Totally normal. This can happen when the cold foam has been sitting for a little while.
Just give the mixture a little stir with a spoon.
How to make matcha cold foam without heavy cream?
You can omit the heavy cream and just froth the milk with matcha powder, a touch of vanilla extract and some sugar.
Basically, this will be a frothed, foamy matcha milk.
Note that the cold foam will sink quickly, especially when used in a warm/hot drink.
